CubeSat - Ground Station

Develop a Zynq-based station that turns C commands into radio requests and returns the measurements sent back by the CubeSat.

Project objective

The client requires a Zynq-based ground station. A C application must be able to trigger transmission of a radio command requesting a new measurement from the CubeSat. The CubeSat then performs the requested acquisition and returns its data; the ground station must receive and validate the response, then make it available to the C software.

Prerequisites

  • Understand Zynq PS/PL partitioning and AXI4-Lite registers.
  • Write embedded C, VHDL modules and testbenches.

Skills you will practice

  • Partition a command chain between C software and FPGA hardware.
  • Connect radio transmission, reception and CubeSat response validation.
  • Verify the complete measurement-request path back to the software.

Project phases

  1. Client Needs and Hardware Selection

Select the Zynq platform and radio capable of implementing the command chain.

  2. Ground-Station PS/PL Architecture

Partition the C software, hardware functions and data path.

  3. Complete Ground-Station Implementation

Implement the complete command and response chain in C and VHDL.

Expected deliverable

Expected delivery: justified hardware choice, PS/PL architecture, VHDL and C sources, a testbench, and demonstration of a complete measurement request through to the returned data.
