Connectors, ESD, and EMC
Protect board inputs and limit paths that radiate or collect noise.
A connector is a boundary
A cable brings useful signals, but also discharges, noise, and potential differences. Protection belongs near the entry point so disturbance current does not travel across the whole board.
Before selecting a connector, check current, voltage, mating cycles, keying, ground, and contact order. For a fast link, pin assignment must also preserve returns and pairs.
ESD
An electrostatic discharge can damage a device or cause a malfunction. The protection path must be short and direct to its intended reference. Poor placement may leave a long sensitive trace between connector and protection device.
Emissions and immunity
Electromagnetic compatibility covers both what the board emits and what it can tolerate. Large loops, broken returns, unnecessarily fast edges, and poorly referenced cables increase risk.
Useful actions:
- keep current loops small;
- maintain continuous reference planes;
- place protection and filtering at the entry point;
- separate noisy areas from sensitive signals;
- provide ground contacts around connectors;
- avoid routing a fast signal over a plane gap;
- use the slowest edge rate compatible with timing.
